I’ll Be Home for Christmas

Simple illustrations can be quite compelling, especially if they convey a powerful message. As an artist and illustrator, it is a constant goal in my mind, to reach someone with something we create.

Yesterday, I was listening to the new She & Him Holiday Album (I am a big fan of Zooey Deschanel) and became inspired to create something on behalf of shelter animals. I had recently read an article about more and more pets being surrendered to shelters across the country around the holiday season. It broke my heart. I am a shelter volunteer, and I have been going to visit the animals on Christmas Eve for two years now; I hate leaving them. It should be the other way around, more pets should have a loving home for the holidays. The turning point came when I’ll Be Home For Christmas started playing. The slow, nostalgic tune haunted me and Ms. Descchanel’s honey-covered, jazzy voice ignited my imagination.
The result of this evening is displayed below. Two illustrations, one message.
I hope it is powerful enough to share, share this blog post, or share the photos below (they are on both the Photo Lab and Design Lab Facebook Pages) and spread the word. I hope it inspires you to adopt a shelter pet, and give them a loving home. I hope that if you can’t adopt, you’ll volunteer and keep these amazing animals company while they wait for their home or consider opening your home to and foster a shelter pet for the holidays. And if you can’t volunteer, may you be inspired to donate anything you can, every little bit helps.

Happy Holidays, and warmest wishes to you and yours this holiday season.
