CURRENTLY DIGGING: April & May

Currently Digging is a collection of things we have enjoyed throughout the month. Great Instagram accounts you should follow, stuff for you, for your dogs/cats, as well as great things to eat/drink or listen to; and of course, cannot forget a great read.
Of course, I am human and got behind on my blogging… ahem… again.
So, here it is, what we “dug” in April and May…
Well Read: I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh
If you like suck-you-in worthy, crime summer reads, this may be a good pick for you. I got hooked pretty quickly and could not put it down. It made me nervous and anxious. It made me really hate the villain and scream at our heroine to stand up for herself. It does touch significantly on domestic abuse from two people’s points of view in a very riveting way, so if that makes you a little uneasy, be warned.

Instagram Follow: @canine_circus_school
Likely the most amazing and fun class we have ever taken with our dog. Francis and Norma Metcalf, the brilliant minds behind this art school for dogs, teach humans and their canine buddies how to “do life better” through functional exercises and tricks. You learn how to teach your dog complex behaviors without ever diving into learning theory. Their Instagram feed is full of photos and videos from their classes (you’ll find Bill, Willow and I there too!). To learn more about Canine Circus School, make sure you check this other thing I wrote about them here on our Lab Notes and Bark Magazine.

Silicone Collapsible Bowl by Messy Mutts
Made from FDA approved food-grade silicone, BPA and PVC free, these sweet and easy to clan bowls have been a must-have on any outing. From backpacking to camping or a simple day hike. I love that these bowls are light, and super convenient. I have even used them to serve our own food in a pinch on a camping trip!

For the taste buds: Exercise Hydration Mix by Skratch Labs
Ever gotten dehydrated after a particularly tough workout, or possibly having stayed a little too long out in the sun? Yeah, not fun. If you sweat, you need to replenish, otherwise, you are in trouble. I for one, hate sugary sport drinks colored bright blue. I don’t need all the fructose corn syrup and food coloring, I need a dose of electrolytes, potassium and natural sugars. I’ve tried a few on the market but the flavor has never been that good, so I have stuck to coconut water for the most part, but when you need an extra hand to refuel, look no further than Scratch Labs. I absolutely LOVE their lemon + lime hydration mix. This fantastic lightly flavored drink mix is no-nonsense re-hydration that is also non-GMO + gluten free + dairy free + vegan + kosher + delicious. I drink it nice and cold after a good hike or yoga class. I have also been sipping on it on these particularly hot days.

For the trail… or the gym: Chi Tank by Athleta
Athleta has really stepped it up in women’s active wear in recent years. After discovering their Unstinkable technology in tops and sports bras, I got officially hooked. I tend to wait for the sales to stock up on my gear, and I wish their sports bras had slightly better sizing available; but the Chi Tanks are a staple in my wardrobe, taking me from trail to town to yoga without looking (or smelling) like I have been sweating all day. Now if only I could say the same for my hair…

Tune in: Tom Rosenthal
I discovered Tom Rosenthal through this incredibly beautiful video by Salomon Running. The music, combined with the theme of the story and the sensory experience touched every nerve and has had me listening to Rosenthal on shuffle for the past two months. Going to be Wonderful is now a bit of a peaceful, mindful hiking or running anthem for me. Don’t miss checking him out.

Lusting after: Fireside Provisions
It is fair to say that when we go backpacking or camping, we tend to need to leave a few luxuries behind, like running water and a hot shower. And though there have been some serious improvements in the dehydrated food department, a pasty meal eaten out of a bag can kill the romance of camping under the stars. Enter Fireside Provisions, who takes the guessing game out of planning meals for your outdoor adventures. Simply pick your adventure (day hiker, over nighter, weekender, backpacker) and a menu of delicious meals will appear. You pick what you want for breakfast, lunch, dinner and any additional trail snacks or dessert (go with the gourmet s’mores folks!), place your order, and a neatly packed box will arrive at your doorstep complete with fresh, local ingredients, cooking instructions and even a packing list to make sure you have every cooking tool you’ll need to make these easy and delicious meals.
We had such a good experience with Fireside Provisions on our recent anniversary camping trip to Bodega Bay, and I can’t say enough good things about them.
