We are very excited to share with you November’s installment for our Critter~a~Month series.
Do you remember your childhood dog? If you are like most of us dog lovers, your first dog is right up there with your first love: idealized, wonderful and most of all… unforgettable. Such is the case for this month’s Critter, in finding I had to pick a breed of dog starting with the letter C I decided to pay tribute to my unforgettable, and beloved friend Boris (aka Bo for short), the dog I grew up with; a Collie that came to me as a gift from my parents on my 10th birthday (I begged my parents day and night for my own Collie since I was obsessed with all the Lassie movies I watched).
Bo was my own version of Lassie (and then some!), faithful, protective, playful (he loved to play basketball with me) and ever by my side through the ups and downs of childhood and teenagedom. One things was certain, I may have grown up, but I NEVER outgrew my dog.
When the time came to leave for college (at 18 I moved from Mexico City to Santa Barbara to attend Brooks Institute of Photography), I knew I would miss my family, my friends and my country, but leaving my dog behind was the most painful of all. I think Bo felt the same way, for my first year away from home was hard, but harder still was to receive a call from my mom, telling me Bo had fallen really ill with cancer, he had a horrible prognosis, he was suffering and they wanted my consent to let him go.
I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to forgive myself for the fact that I wasn’t there for my friend; he was always there for me. Ten years have passed, and yet, I still miss him, think of him often and I am always grateful to have had him in my life.
To my beloved Bo, this is for you my friend. Miss you.
What about you? Do you have a memory of your childhood dog or cat? Please share your stories, I’d love to hear them.
